In the 8th edition of CHAdeMO V2G webinar held on 2 March, we learned about the findings from the UK's EV-elocity project, which was completed last year. Implemented by a consortium of Cenex, public authorities and academic institutions, this project sought to demonstrate V2G in a range of real-world situations using real-life fleets. The project had five objectives, but in particular, we asked the speakers to focus on their findings on the impact of V2G on battery degradation, as this is one of the burning questions most often voiced by the audience throughout the webinar series.

Our first speaker, Chris Rimmer from CENEX, explained that they created a degradation model to predict lifetime degradation due to cycling (due to use) and calendar (due to time) ageing.

The aim was to see if there were ways to pre-condition batteries to minimise degradation due to charging, and if different types of preconditioning strategies, including V1G and V2G, could produce different results. The results showed that with an intelligent balance between cycling and calendar ageing, and with the right SoC, it is possible to mitigate the total ageing process from 7.3 – 26.7% for the first 100 days of operational life and gradually vary to 8.6 – 12.3% for one-year continual operation compared to the baseline reference which is the battery aging results of the standard charging strategy.

Lucelia Rodrigues from the University of Nottingham presented other key findings of the project, highlighting in particular that despite the increased energy demand from EV charging, V2G could deliver carbon savings of around 450 kg per charge point per year. Indeed, V2G was able to shift energy demand to a period of higher renewable energy generation and lower grid carbon intensity without affecting current service provision.

She ended her presentation by introducing the new project ‘EV-shAIR’ aiming at creating a new V2G business model by using the battery capacity of EVs in the long stay airport parking to meet the needs of the airport's daily operations.

Besides the EV-elocity project, a short presentation was given by Josey Wardle of Innovate UK on the 2nd phase of V2X Innovation Programme, which aims to address barriers to enabling energy flexibility from bi-directional EV charging. The call for proposals will open shortly in the coming weeks. For more information, please visit the UK government’s website.
