World’s first safety certification for the “boost mode” of high-power charging issued

UL has issued the world's first safety certification for CHAdeMO's “boost mode" high-power charging, which enables charging with higher current than the continuous rated current of the cable assembly for a limited period of time to shorten the duration of charge

UL, a global safety science organisation, has issued a certification (CRD, Certification Requirement Decision) to UL 2251 to accommodate “high power charging under specific operating condition defined as D2 category in table 7.1 (hereafter “boost mode”)” specified by the CHAdeMO Association in March 2017. The world’s 1st certification has been issued for high power charging cables with connectors “SEVD™-11U,” manufactured by Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., based in Osaka, Japan.

The “Boost Mode” was showcased to the representatives from the California State Government, including the Secretary of State of the Environment Protection Agency, at the ceremony of the  NEDO EV charging infrastructure project in Northern California mid-June.

The “Boost Mode” enables  charging with higher current than the continuous rated current of the cable assembly for a limited period of time, through dynamic current control with temperature monitoring function, which can further shorten charging time of EVs.

CHAdeMO Association expects these efforts to further improve the convenience of EV drivers, while ensuring the safety of higher power charging.
