• 200 new 100kW DC fast chargers will be installed by Nissan and EVgo in select U.S. markets
• These chargers will be equipped with both CHAdeMO and CCS connectors to benefit all fast charge-capable EV models
• With Tesla’s CHAdeMO adapter available for Model 3, CHAdeMO chargers are accessible to over 80% of fast charge-capable plug-ins on the roads in the USA

According to the press release by Nissan North America and EVgo on 6 August 2019, these two companies are jointly adding 200 ultra-fast CHAdeMO chargers to the existing DC charging network over the coming few years. This collaboration builds on the six-year long partnership of the two companies, which includes, among others, the fast chargers built along the I-95 corridor on the East Coast and the DRIVEtheARC corridor in California from Monterey to Lake Tahoe.

Each of the new fast-chargers they shall install can deliver 100kW and have both CHAdeMO and CCS connectors in order to make them accessible to all plug-ins with fast-charging capability.

According to EV-volumes.com, 145,000 BEVs and 5,700 PHEVs equipped with a CHAdeMO DC fast charging port have been sold in the USA as of the end of July this year. Add to it the 447,000 Tesla EVs who could use CHAdeMO fast chargers via Tesla’s adapter, CHAdeMO chargers are accessible to over 80% of all fast-chargeable plug-ins on the roads in the USA today.

In terms of the charging infrastructure, as per the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center accessed on 23 August, there are over 2,000 CHAdeMO charging stations in the United States, but as the recent large-scale ultra-fast EV charging infrastructure project allocates only a small number of CHAdeMO chargers in their charger mix, the growth of CHAdeMO connector installation has been stagnating in the past few months.

“CHAdeMO welcomes this initiative by Nissan and EVgo, two of the pioneering companies in electro-mobility,” said Takafumi Anegawa, President, CHAdeMO Association. “We fully support multi-standard charging to promote electro-mobility as a whole. However, given the disproportionately small number of CHAdeMO plugs in the recent ultra-fast charger deployment, the American drivers of CHAdeMO-compatible plug-ins would greatly benefit from a boost in the CHAdeMO ultra-fast charging infrastructure deployment.”
